I’m delighted to announce that my feature length screenplay, Blind–Sighted, has just won ‘Best Screenplay’ at the Wigan and Leigh Film Festival. Blind-sighted is a very important story to me so it is lovely for it to get the recognition I hope it deserves.
I was lucky enough to attend this wonderfully well-run festival and watched some incredible short films – I also got to meet the judges who read my work and apparently it beat another 50 screenplays, so that just makes me even more proud.
It’s the story of Del, a young athlete who loses her site after a brain haemorrhage, and how she learns to run again with the help of Lee, a young offender who spots her, whilst doing community service in the park she runs in. Lee is the victim of an acid attack and has a badly scarred face – his confidence is destroyed, but together with Del, he starts to overcome his personal difficulties.
Lee becomes Del’s assisted runner and together they try and qualify for the blind running team going to the Commonwealth Games.
It’s a gritty, but ultimately optimistic tale and I have no doubt that when the right person reads it, it will get made (perhaps one of the film makers at the festival will have a read?).
There’s nothing like getting recognition for your work as a writer and to get recognition from a UK based film festival is extremely rewarding.
Thank you Wigan and Leigh Film festival… I’ll try and enter something else as worthy next year!
